Although steel roofs are prized for their longevity and durability, they should still be inspected annually for signs of rust or loose fasteners. Painted steel roofs can last up to 10 years before needing to be repainted, if high-quality paint is used. Here are some preparation and painting tips for getting your steel roof in tip-top shape.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ladder
  • Broom
  • Roof fasteners
  • Socket driver
  • Power screwdriver
  • Wire brush
  • Power washer
  • Detergent
  • High-quality roof caulk
  • Roof paint
  • Paint roller (optional)
  • Paint sprayer (optional)
  1. Step 1

Place the ladder in a secure area to gain access to the roof. Use the broom to clean the roof of debris, such as small tree limbs and leaves.

  2. Step 2

Check for any loose or missing fasteners. Replace and secure the fasteners using the correct-sized driver socket and power screwdriver.

  3. Step 3

Remove any loose or flaking paint with the wire brush. Thoroughly clean the roof with the power washer, adding a high-grade detergent to the power washer's solution tank. Rinse the roof with clean water. Allow the roof to dry completely.

  4. Step 4

Fill any small holes with high-quality roof caulk. Cover any suspected leaking fasteners with the caulk as well. Allow the caulk to fully cure by following the manufacturer's directions on the label.

  5. Step 5

Apply the paint to the roof on a clear, warm, sunny day with either a roller or sprayer. Follow the manufacturer's recommended application methods. Many metal roof paints come with strict temperature guidelines. Failure to follow these instructions may cause the paint to not adhere properly to the metal. A few days of dry weather will be needed for paint to fully cure and adhere to the metal.

  6. Step 6

Inspect the final paint and its adhesion to the metal surface. A touch-up may be required for areas that have received heavy traffic during application.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you feel uncomfortable about climbing onto the roof, hire a reputable contractor to perform the work for you.
  • Be aware of your surroundings when climbing on any roof, and use appropriate safety equipment.
