Instructions

    • 1

Gather all the necessary materials. A new -- or close to new but still sharp -- razor is by far the most important requirement. Do not try shaving your face with a dull blade. Doing this will result in razor bumps and cuts. You don't need a new blade for every shave, but make sure it's still sharp all around. Make sure the mirror you will use is clean, and that you have enough light in your bathroom.

Shave after a hot shower. If you want to shave before your shower, just be sure to splash hot water on your face and neck to soften up the hair. An optional step after this is to apply a preshave oil to help soften up your facial hair.

    • 3

Use a horse hair or boar hair shaving brush to apply a generous amount of shaving cream to your face and neck. Some of today's shaving products are designed specifically for sensitive skin. Use a shaving cream for sensitive skin.

    • 4

Shave with the grain of your facial hair in smooth, firm strokes. Be careful not to apply too much pressure. Remember, you are only shaving the surface of your skin, so apply the right amount of pressure. After each single stroke, rinse your razor clean under hot water.

    • 5

Rinse your face clean with cool water. Gently pat your face dry with a clean towel and apply an aftershave gel that will be cool, soothing and refreshing.

    • 6

Apply an antiseptic if you nick yourself.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use an electric razor.

  • Don't use an alcohol-based aftershave.
