It’s hard to pass up a sale sometimes even if you know the quality of the garment isn’t really there! (Especially when you’re low on cash!) Typically you want to buy investment pieces that don’t pill, but if you have a few inexpensive items with a little pilling that you want to fix, try this tip! Lint rollers can’t help much with piling and fabric shavers can be expensive. I thought, hmm, a fabric shaver is just a razor after all!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Razor
  1. Step 1

My garment was a Bitten coat from the now defunct Steve and Barry store I had showed some major pilling and I tried this technique to fix it right up! First, lay the garment flat on a hard surface.

  2. Step 2

Buy a flat one-sided razor. These can be found in some drugstore and most beauty supply stores. Most times you will have to ask the salesperson for them as they are usually behind the counter or behind a glass cabinet.

  3. Step 3

Unwrap the razor and and begin to gently rub it onto the garment upwards at a slight angle. Fuzz and the pilling will start accumulating under the razor.

  4. Step 4

Keep using the razor in an almost “combing” technique up the garment. Remove the accumulated fuzz and continue to do this for the sleeves, body of the coat or sweater, etc.

  5. Step 5

Smooth down the material of your garment with your hands afterwards to push down any fibers that may have come up a little.

Tips & Warnings
  • To be extra safe, wear a glove while using the razor to prevent any cuts.
  • Make sure the fabric is thick enough to withstand the motion of the razor. Not recommended for silk or fine fabrics.
