Matching games are fun for the whole family to play together because almost any aged child can be successful. Making your own game is simple and fun, or they can be found at almost any toy store. Here are directions if you have made your own game. Games can be made with children of different ages and abilities. Cards can be decorated with pictures or they can have new vocabulary children are learning. Spelling words can be put on the cards, or theories of science. At the end of these directions is a link to instructions on how to make your own matching game.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 12 or more pairs of matching cards
  • 2 or more players
  1. Step 1

Mix up the cards by putting them face down on a table or the floor and sliding them around and under and over one another until all players agree they are thoroughly mixed.

  2. Step 2

Spread the cards out face down on a table or the floor in a single layer. Making the cards evenly spaced in a rectangle or square makes it easier for the players to remember where the matching pairs are. Putting the cards at any random angle makes the game just a little more difficult.

  3. Step 3

Players sit around the cards in a circle if more than two players. If only two players, then they sit across from each other.

  4. Step 4

Choose the person to go first by flipping a coin or rolling a die. The person with the highest number goes first. If playing the game more than once, either the winner of the last game can go first, or the person to the left of the person who went first in the last game can go first.

  5. Step 5

The first player turns over two cards. If they match, they are his, and he goes again. He continues turning over two cards at a time to find matches as long as he makes a match each time. If the two cards he turns over don’t match, it is the next player’s turn. The next player is the one clockwise or to the left of the last player.

  6. Step 6

Continue the game until all the cards have been picked up.

  7. Step 7

The player with the most pairs wins.
