1
Plant trailing varieties such as petunias, begonias or impatiens, either a single plant or flower or a combination of blooming plants and greenery. Ivy, sweet potato vine and variegated vinca work well with annuals. If you use more than one kind of plant, plant the tallest type in the center of the basket, with shorter varieties around it.

2
Fill the hanging basket with potting soil. Line a wire basket with a layer of sphagnum moss before you add the soil. Mix in a tablespoon of slow-release fertilizer.

Transfer the plants from the transplant pots to the hanging basket. For a fuller basket, transplant at least eight plants. To save money, use six plants; in a few weeks they will grow to fill the basket. Arrange the plants around the edge of the planter and add one or two plants to the center. If you're using a wire basket, you can also plant the sides as well as the top by pushing the roots through the wire and moss from the outside of the basket. Pat the soil firmly around the plants.

Water the basket and hang it in full or partial sun, depending upon the requirements of the plants. Keep the soil moist. Hanging baskets can dry out quickly, so in hot weather, water twice a day. Pinch spent blooms off to encourage new growth.
