Catalina Island, California is a fascinating, charming spot to visit off the coast of Los Angeles. It is easy to take a ferry there from several locations, including the port at San Pedro, and the harbors in Newport Beach and Dana Point. It is so easy to travel there, that many people just go for the day. However, it is an absolutely delightful place to spend a weekend. Where should you stay?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Near the beach, one popular location is the Pavilion Lodge. It is also conveniently located within the town of Avalon. Room rates vary from $120 to $334 a night.

  2. Step 2

A charming, small hotel that has operated in Avalon since the 1920's is the Hotel Atwater. They have economy rooms that go in the off-season for as little as $50 a night, and have suites for as much as $324.

  3. Step 3

You can make reservations or get more information about both the Pavilion Lodge and the Hotel Atwater at (800) 446-0201 or their website at www.VisitCatalinaIsland.com.

  4. Step 4

The Hermosa Hotel and Cottages is another economical choice. The hotel is located about 1/2 a block from the beach. The cottages have kitchenettes, which can make your weekend even more affordable! For more information, you can contact them at (877) 241-1313 or www.hermosahotel.com.

  5. Step 5

Another selection is the Catalina Canyon Resort, where rooms start at $110. Contact them at (866) 573-4235.

  6. Step 6

A final suggestion is the Glenmore Plaza Hotel, near the Wrigley Memorial. The rooms there start at $135. Their phone number is (866) 678-6350.

Wherever you stay, Catalina Island is popular with hikers, bicyclists, divers, beach combers, boaters, golfers and people who simply enjoy ambling through the streets of a small, charming, historical village.
