If you are short on sewing supplies this year due to tough times in your household do not worry because I have a solution! If you wear wool sweaters in your house and they are just laying around in piles everywhere do not throw them away take a second look at them. This easy project will having you felt these sweaters in no time to make a great functional gifts for your whole family during this holiday season.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two felted wool sweaters with all seams cut out
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Take two different colored felted sweaters and cut the seams out. Once you have flat pieces of sweater left it time to cut rectangles out. The size of rectangle is determined by the width of your head. Measure your head and the number will be divided by 4. That will be the size of your rectangles. The length is decided on by how large is it that you want the top to rise. Do you want it to be snug to your head or to have a small gap? I don't like my hats to be tight onto my head so I made it is little longer than other people might have theirs.

  2. Step 2

Once you have the rectangles cut out it is time to pin right sides together and sew. Try to maintain your 1/4" seam allowance on your seams so that you can have ample room for a tight seam.

  3. Step 3

Once that is done, lay you pieces of sewn wool open so that you can pin the two right sides together.

  4. Step 4

Sew right sides together. Always maintaining that 1/4" seam allowance on your seams so that you can have ample room for a tight seam.

  5. Step 5

To keep all intersecting seams matching, pin each seam lining up so that when they are sewn together they will look like one long seam that is sewn. Next sew top edge closed. After the top is sewn trim corners so that there is less bulk when the hat is turned inside out.

  6. Step 6

Turn the hat inside out and hem. Now what you need to do is hem the open edge of the hat. This is important because you don't want an raw edges showing and you want it to look professional.

  7. Step 7

Hem the again but instead of sewing it on the machine it would be better if you sewed by hand.

  8. Step 8

Turn the hat wrong side out. To get that folded look that you see in the original picture you need to match up the corners at the top of the hat and sew corners together. Make sure it is a secure stitch because you don't want it to fall apart when someone wears it!

  9. Step 9

Once that is done it is time to reverse the hat and shape it into the style that you love! Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Try adding buttons, flowers, skull and crossbones or anything that you can think of for a little bit of flair!
  • Wash hats in cold water and lay flat to dry. Don't machine wash in hot water! Or it will shrink.
