Go to a four year college and get a related undergraduate degree. In order to start the speech language pathologist certification, you will need to major in an area such as audiology, speech pathology, deaf studies, or even education.

Enroll in a speech language pathologist masters program. Almost all speech language pathology jobs require at least a masters degree.

Look for an internship opportunity to get in at least 300 clinical experience hours. To be a speech language therapist, you need a certification, which usually requires between 300 and 400 hours of hands on experience.

Learn to teach others. Patience, understanding, and flexibility are must haves for those who are going to start a speech language pathologist career; a lot of time is spent in teaching mode.

Study medical terminology associated with speech language pathology training. A large part of the speech language pathology position involves diagnosis and treatment of audiology disorders.
