Some clothes do not have their dye set and when you wash them. You end up with the dye from them all over the other clothing you washed with them. This is also a common when you dye fabric yourself. In order to avoid clothes dye running onto other clothes there are a few things you can do to set the dye yourself. Most of the items used for setting the dye on your garments are probably already in your house. These are easy and inexpensive ways to save your clothing from the dreaded running dye. These treatments are for the garments that may run.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Soak your clothing in ½ of a gallon of very cold water and approximately 1 cup of salt for about 45 minutes to an hour. Be sure salt in dissolved before putting the garment in. Wash as usual.

  2. Step 2

Pour about ½ of a gallon of cold water into a bucket and add 2 cups of white vinegar. Stir to mix. Add your garment and let sit for an hour or so. Launder as usual.

  3. Step 3

Fill your washing machine with cold. Add 1 cup of Epsom salts. Place clothing in the washing machine. Allow the washer to agitate for a few minutes. Turn the washing machine off. Allow the garment to soak for an hour or 2. Turn the washer back on and allow it to go through the rest of the cycle.
