Mug rugs are coasters that add a special touch to your home or office. Old flannel shirts or colored T-shirts make effective mug rug coasters because of their ability to soak up moisture from cold drinks. Blend colors or use solids to match your decor. Seasonal mug rugs will add to holiday decorations and will show visitors you have thought of even the smallest detail. Make several to ensure your guests will have a place to set mugs or glasses. The supplies to make a mug rug are minimal, so you can keep them on hand for a quick gift idea.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cut three strips of fabric. Each strip should be 2 yards long and 1 inch wide. A medium-weight cotton material will work well for this project.

  2. Step 2

Layer the three ends of the fabric, one on top of the other, and stitch the ends together.

  3. Step 3

Fasten the stitched end to a stable object. Use a safety pin to attach the fabric to an upholstered chair, tie the end to a drawer or ask someone to hold the end. The fabric needs to be held still only until the braid is long enough to hold under your foot or put between your knees.

  4. Step 4

Braid the three pieces together. Fold and tuck the cut ends toward the middle if you want a very neat finish. Snip off stray fibers with scissors.

  5. Step 5

Stitch the end of the finished braid together.

  6. Step 6

Coil the braid and stitch the coils together. Use a simple basting stitch to secure the sides. Stitch between the braids, grabbing one side of the braid with the thread and pushing the needle through the other side.

  7. Step 7

Finish the end by sewing it neatly to the braid.

  8. Step 8

Press the mug rug flat with a steam iron.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lay the rugs flat to air-dry after washing to prevent the sides from curling up. Flip the rugs halfway through the drying process for a faster drying time.
