Gardeners desiring a hint of green often choose an English ivy plant for a sunny corner in a room. English ivy grows attractively in a hanging basket or trailing down a bookshelf. Many people grow thriving English ivy plants when the plant has the proper amount of light, water and fertilizer. If you are searching for an attractive plant with trailing stems, consider growing English ivy in a pot.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Container
  • Potting soil
  • English ivy plant
  • Water soluble fertilizer (20-10-10) or (20-20-20)
  1. Step 1

Fill the container approximately half-full with the potting soil. Add the English ivy plant to the container and place additional potting soil in the container to fill in the container around the roots of the plant so that the English ivy is at the same depth as it was in the temporary container. Firm the soil lightly around the base of the plant.

  2. Step 2

Water the English ivy plant lightly immediately after planting. Provide regular water for the English ivy plant at intervals that are spaced enough to just prevent the plant from wilting. Do not over water the English ivy plant. To determine whether the plant needs water, lift the container and feel how heavy it is. If it feels quite light and the top half of the soil in the container is dry, water the ivy plant lightly.

  3. Step 3

Place the English ivy plant in a location that receives filtered sunlight for best results. Direct sunlight will damage the leaves of the ivy plant. If you do not have a location that receives filtered sunlight, use a grow light or fluorescent lights to provide light for the English ivy plant. Strive for approximately ten hours of filtered or artificial sunlight per day.

  4. Step 4

Fertilize the English ivy plant by mixing 1 tsp. of the fertilizer with 1 gallon of water. Pour the fertilizer around the soil in the container without getting fertilizer on the plant foliage. Fertilize the English ivy plants between six and eight times over a one-year period.

Tips & Warnings
  • Watch the ivy plants for signs that they are receiving too much light. If the leaves become pale, decrease the strength of the light or increase the distance between the source of light and the ivy plant.
