How to Connect Bipolar Speakers

Bipolar speakers are audio loudspeakers that have been wired internally to produce sound in at least two directions, typically from the front and back of the speaker cabinet. Bipolar speakers are often used as the rear channels in a home theater audio setup because they produce a richer, more immersing and three-dimensional listening experience. Some bipolar speakers are equipped with a switch to toggle between the bipolar effect and regular audio for listening to movies or stereo music. Bipolar speakers connect to a receiver in the same manner as regular speakers, although room placement is different.

Instructions

    • 1

Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from both ends of the speaker wire. Each speaker wire has two strands marked with a different insulation color, typically red and black or yellow and black.

    • 2

Check the connectors on the back of the bipolar speakers to attach the wire. Bipolar speakers usually have either spring-loaded clips or screw posts for attaching the wires. Lift the spring clips to expose the holes underneath for the two wires, or unscrew the post knobs to expose a bare metal shaft underneath for wrapping the wire, then tightening the post.

    • 3

Attach the black wire to the black (negative) post on the back of each speaker, and connect the red or yellow wire to the positive post on the speaker.

    • 4

Connect the other ends of the speaker wires to the back of the home theater receiver. The left channel bipolar speaker connects to the left channel post on the receiver, and the right channel connects to the right post. This will ensure correct audio reproduction and the best possible surround sound effects.

    • 5

Move the bipolar speakers between 6 and 24 inches away from the wall for the best sound dispersal. Some bipolar speakers fire sound from the front and back of the cabinet, so the speaker must not lean directly against the wall. Bipolar speakers are often installed to the sides or just behind the main seating area, slightly above head level.
