How to Clean Cubic Zirconia With a Home Remedy

Cubic zirconia (CZ) is worn as a diamond substitute. However, its atoms are not as tightly packed. This porosity leads to absorption of body oils. Therefore, it needs to be cleaned occasionally to return it to its original appearance. Some CZ sellers advertise their product as encased in a layer of diamond to seal the pores and prevent discoloring absorption. This would cut down on the need for cleaning.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 1 to 2 drops of ammonia with 2 to 3 drops of dishwashing soap in 1/2 cup of warm water. Use a damp cloth, pipe cleaners, toothpicks or a soft toothbrush to get all the scum off.

    • 2

Rinse well with warm or hot water, especially since you are cleaning with some of the very substances that can be absorbed (soap and ammonia).

    • 3

Take your CZ to a jeweler for a high-pressure steam clean if the above has not returned it to its prior brilliance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the gem isn't loose before cleaning. If so, get it repaired before cleaning.

  • Don't immerse it in any liquid if it is foil-backed, since the foil might disengage.

  • Apply all lotions, makeup, hairspray and so on before putting on CZ jewelry. Don't wear it while cleaning with ammonia or bleach, and don't swim in chlorinated pools with it.
