How to Remove Stubborn Calcium Stains From the Tub

Calcium stains in the bathtub are usually due to hard water and can be difficult to remove. Cleaning with soap and water or even scrubbing with a brush doesn't seem to have much of an effect on stubborn calcium stains. While some commercial cleaners claim the ability to remove calcium stains from the bathtub, often those cleaners can be abrasive and damage the surface of the tub. Before you risk trying a commercial cleaner or using a scouring pad to remove the stains, try cleaning your tub with a solution made from items you probably already have in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the tub with dishwashing liquid and warm water to remove soap residue and dirt. Rinse the tub thoroughly.

    • 2

Pour 1/4 cup baking soda and one cup of vinegar into a plastic container. Mix the ingredients until the baking soda dissolves.

    • 3

Saturate the calcium stains with the cleaning solution. Pour the solution directly onto the stains or use a sponge to saturate stains on the bathtub walls. Allow the cleaning solution to sit for an hour.

    • 4

Rinse the cleaning solution off the tub with cool water and scrub the cleaned areas with a soft-bristled brush to remove any remaining stain. If the stain did not completely lift, then repeat the steps and allow the cleaner to sit for an hour and a half.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear gloves when cleaning to protect your hands.

  • After each cleaning, wipe the tub sides and walls with a cloth that is treated with lemon oil to help prevent calcium buildup. Do not wipe the bottom of the tub as the lemon oil will make the surface slick.
