How to Tighten a U Bolt

A U bolt is a bolt that is shaped like a "U" -- hence, the name. The top two points on the bolt are threaded and nuts are screwed onto them to secure them to various types of components. On automobiles, these types of bolts are typically used to secure mufflers and exhaust components.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Place the bottom of the "U" around the exhaust piping or other component you are trying to secure.

  2. Step 2

    Thread the upper end of the "U" with retaining nuts.

  3. Step 3

    Tighten the nut on the U bolt with a socket wrench. Make sure that both sides of the bolt are tightened evenly.
