How to Seal Coat a Blacktop

Instructions

    • 1

Before you begin the project, make sure the weather forecast is rain free for at least two days and that the temperature will not drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Patch any large holes or cracks in the asphalt. Flip the bucket of sealant upside down and put it aside for later use. This will ensure that the sealant is properly mixed.

    • 3

Using the push broom, remove debris from the surface you are going to seal. Note any oil spots before proceeding to the next step.

    • 4

Spray the surface with the hose to remove any remaining dust. Using the coarse brush and detergent, scrub and remove any oil spots that you spotted. Allow the surface to dry completely.

    • 5

Flip the bucket of sealant over and open the top. Using the clean wooden stick, mix up the sealant so that it is completely homogeneous.

    • 6

Starting at one corner of the surface, pour enough sealant to spread over a 20-square-foot area. Use the roller to spread the sealant until all of the amount you poured is distributed. Repeat this process until the entire surface is covered.

    • 7

Allow the sealant to dry for at least 24 hours before walking or driving on it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear old clothing in case you get any sealant on yourself.
