How to Spread Thinset for Ceramic Tile

As there are many types of thinset adhesive available for laying ceramic tile, choose a mortar that will make the rest of the job easier. Use gray thinset if your tiles are dark or you plan to use a dark grout, and white if your tiles are lighter in color or you plan to use a light-colored grout. Either way, spreading the thinset properly will ensure you get the results you are after. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Mix the thinset mortar powder with water in the bucket until it is the consistency of creamy peanut butter; use a mixing stick (such as a paint stirrer) or a drill with a mixing paddle attached, set on low. Make sure there are no lumps and that the thinset is easy to handle. You can substitute a latex acrylic additive for water to add flexibility.

    • 2

You should already have sections marked out for your tile design, so work one section at a time. You can apply the thinset directly to the substrate floor by scooping a portion out of the bucket with the trowel and putting it on the substrate. It should stick easily and hold its shape, if properly mixed.

    • 3

Holding the trowel at an angle, push down and away to spread. Make sure the thinset is distributed evenly across the entire section at about the height of the notches on the trowel. All the ridges of the thinset need to go the same direction. Set your tile on the thinset.

    • 4

To apply thinset to the back of each tile (recommended), place the appropriate amount for your size tile in the center of the tile back. Again, the compound should stick easily and hold its shape.

    • 5

Holding the trowel at a slight angle, spread the thinset from the center to each corner by pushing down and away from the center. The tile back should be completely covered with an even coat, using the trowel notch as a guide to thickness. Set the tile in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mix thinset in small amounts to avoid the compound drying out before it can be applied.

  • Avoid quick-dry thinsets, as you may need to reposition tiles along the way.

  • If you are applying thinset to the substrate, you will need to clean between the set tiles with a toothbrush or other small instrument to create a deeper anchor base for the grout, to make a stronger joint.

  • Make sure all the corners of your tile are covered with thinset to avoid breakage after the floor is finished.

  • Wear safety glasses and an air filtration mask when mixing thinset to avoid silica dust particles from entering eyes or lungs.

  • Give your knees a break by wearing knee pads or using an ergonomic portable knee mat.
