  1. How to Kill Lily Pads

    • 1

Purchase an aquatic herbicide based from the chemical glyphosate. This is a fairly common chemical found in herbicides like Rodeo and Aquamaster. This type of herbicide is widely known for being very effective against unwanted plant life like lily pads, but not harming the wildlife around it.

    • 2

Follow the directions on the bottle to mix the herbicide into an appropriate mixture and put in a sprayer or pump.

    • 3

When you get to the pond, first clear out as many lily pads with the rake as possible. Even with EPA approved herbicides, it's always a good idea to use as few chemicals as possible.

    • 4

After raking away the lily pads in easy reach, apply the herbicide to one area of the pond, preferably no larger than a quarter of it. If you treat the entire pond at once, the dying vegetation will suck away oxygen that any fish in the pond need to live. Treat one section at a time to prevent this.

    • 5

Wait for a week or two before treating another area of the pond with herbicide. In the meantime, you can rake away all the dead vegetation that comes to the surface to make sure the fish and other aquatic life have the oxygen they need to survive.

    • 6

Treat another area of the pond about two weeks after the first. Repeat the same steps for each section of the pond until all the lily pads are dead.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always try to rake away as much as you can at first. This will create less dead vegetation clutter which can be harmful to the fish.

  • Never treat the entire pond at once. You will kill all the fish by basically suffocating them, because the dead vegetation will take all the oxygen out of the water.
