Ignitors ignite the gas either by heating up and glowing or sending a spark. When the ignitor on your gas dryer fails, the dryer will not heat and you'll have wet clothes. To save money on an expensive repair bill you can learn how to replace an ignitor in a gas dryer. Ignitors are available at most appliance repair facilities. You will need to provide them with the model number and brand of your dryer to get the correct ignitor.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Putty knife
  • Wrench set
  • Replacement ignitor
  1. Step 1

Unplug the dryer from the outlet. Turn the gas shut off valve counterclockwise to shut the gas supply off. The shut off valve is on the gas line near the back of the dryer.

  2. Step 2

Remove the control console from the top of the dryer. There are two screws that secure the front of the control panel to the console or two retaining spring clips depending upon your model. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver or putty knife to disconnect the control console and maneuver the console out of your way without disconnecting any wires.

  3. Step 3

Insert the putty knife blade between the top and front panels of the dryer and press in the retaining spring clip to disengage the corner of the top panel. Lift up on the top panel to disengage the opposite spring clip and remove the dryer top panel from the dryer.

  4. Step 4

Disconnect the top of the front panel by removing the securing screws that attach it to the side panels with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Lift up on the front panel to release it from the base of the dryer and set it out of your way.

  5. Step 5

Reach your hand under the dryer drum and locate the idler pulley. Push the idler pulley to the left to release tension on the drum belt. Remove the belt from the idler pulley and the motor pulley. Lift the dryer drum up and slide it out of the front of the dryer bringing the drum belt with the drum.

  6. Step 6

Use a wrench to disconnect the gas line from the back of the dryer. Pull the wiring harness apart that connects the flame sensor to the burner assembly. Pull the wiring harness apart that connects the burner assembly to the main harness. Use a wrench to remove the bolt that secures the burner support bracket to the dryer base. Pull the burner forward to unhook it and pull it out of the dryer.

  7. Step 7

Disconnect the two wire connector from the ignitor wiring harness and loosen the nut that secures the ignitor to the front of the burner assembly. Pull the ignitor off of the burner assembly and slide the new ignitor into the burner assembly. Tighten the securing nut to secure the ignitor to the burner assembly.

  8. Step 8

Push the new ignitor two wire connector into the burner wiring harness until it locks into place. Connect the burner assembly into the support bracket clips and secure the support bracket to the dryer base using the retaining screws. Reconnect the wiring harnesses for the main harness and the flame sensor.

  9. Step 9

Place the dryer drum and belt back in the dryer. Route the belt around the motor pulley and idler pulley. Pull the idler pulley to the right to engage the belt tension. Place the front back into place and reattach it to the side panels using the securing screws.

  10. Step 10

Slide the top panel back into position and press down on it to engage the spring clips. Reattach the control console to the top of the dryer. Reconnect the gas line and turn the gas shut off valve back on to the dryer. Check for gas leaks around the connection and adjust if necessary. Plug the dryer back into the dryer wall outlet.
