Put on cleaning gloves and a protective mask.

Spray the rusty area with a rust remover such as Magica or Evapo-Rust, which can be purchased at most hardware stores.

Scrub away the rust using a piece of thick, white cotton cloth, which can be purchased at a fabric store. White cotton towels also work well. Carefully follow the directions found on the rust-removing product, and continue scrubbing until you can see that the white cloth is no longer picking up brown rust residue.
