How to Replace Diffuser Reeds
Reed diffusers are a flameless alternative to candles and make an elegant replacement for potpourri. When used properly they provide a constant, subtle flow of fragrance into the room. If you notice that your reed diffusers aren't producing as strong a scent as before, or any scent at all, try flipping them over to refresh the scent. If they still don't smell like they used to, it's time to replace them. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Check the ends of your new reed diffusers to make sure you have the appropriate product. Bamboo, for example, works poorly as a diffuser. You should have reeds that show a honeycomb cross section on both ends, not hollow grass tubes like bamboo.
-
2
Remove the old reed diffusers from your container of oil. Take the opportunity to replenish the oil, if necessary; ideally, the level should be high enough for a couple of inches of the reed to be immersed in the oil.

3
Insert new reed diffusers into the oil container. It doesn't matter which end of the reed goes up. You can trim the diffusers to any length you like.
-
4
Remove the reeds you just inserted and turn them over, placing the other end in the container. This exposes the oil-moistened ends to the air, generating fragrance. Oil will continue wicking up through the sticks, but you can turn them every so often--once a week works well--to refresh the scent.
