How to Size a Baseboard Heater

Baseboard heaters are a good way to heat individual rooms, if you have the right size heater. As with other types of heaters, too small of a heater won't be able to heat the room to the temperature you want. Too large of a heater will short cycle, a problem that causes the heater to turn on and off more than it should, which will cost you more money. Luckily, there is any easy way to find a general guideline for the size of heater you need. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the room you want to heat with the baseboard heater, then the width. Multiply the length by the width to get square feet of the room.

    • 2

Determine the level of insulation in the room. Cracked windows, drafts, thin walls, or anything that allows air from outside in will contribute to a poor insulation problem. If you have average or poor insulation in the room you're heating, you will want a slightly larger heater than you would get if you were just going by square footage.

    • 3

Multiply the room's square footage by 10. This will give you the number of watts you should look for in a heater. Baseboard heater output is measured in watts, so this will be easy to find when you look at heaters.
