Philodendrons are an indoor plant that grows downwards with long stems filled with big heart shaped leaves. The plant can withstand many different climates, but does need some care to stay healthy and green. If the plant is not cared for properly, the stems will become bare as the leaves turn yellow and brown as they die. You should know how to care for philodendron plants so that they live a long time on a table or in a hanging basket.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fertilizer
  • Rag
  • Gravel
  • Climbing pole
  1. Step 1

Provide a climbing pole for the plant if it is planted in a table planter. The Philodendron is a climbing plant, but if it is planted in a hanging basket, the stems can hang downwards or wrapped around the hanger.

  2. Step 2

Keep the temperatures between 60 and 85 degree F for the plant to grow. House temperatures will be fine as long as there is heat or cooling during respected climate changes. During the summer months, the plant can placed outside out of direct sunlight.

  3. Step 3

Use warm water to water the plant. Keep the soil semi moist, but not wet or soaked. Rainwater may be too acidic for the philodendron and should be avoided.

  4. Step 4

Keep the plant in a window or on a table out of direct sunlight. An east window with a few hours of sun will work fine. North windows with light are good choices.

  5. Step 5

Use a plant fertilizer every two weeks or use a Miracle Gro plant fertilizer spike. Insert it in the soil. The spike will last for two to three months.

  6. Step 6

Wipe the leaves down with a damp rag every month to keep them shiny and dust free.

  7. Step 7

Control pests if they appear. For mealy bugs, which leave a cotton mass on the leaves, use a soapy mist to spray the bugs and use a damp rag to remove the cotton masses. For red spider mites, use a soapy solution to wash the leaves. Pay close attention to the underside of the leaves.

Tips & Warnings
  • The philodendron is a good plant to have in the home to assist in removing chemical vapors in the air.
  • This plant is toxic to pets and children. If ingested, contact your nearest poison control center.
