Wallpaper can be troublesome and tiresome to remove. Though wallpaper removal is recommended, the decorative surface may not want to cooperate. The removal project may be nearly impossible without major damage to existing drywall. Instructions

    • 1

Check to make sure the wallpaper is firmly glued to the wall surface. Do not add Venetian plaster to loose wallpaper. Add small amounts of wallpaper glue where paper is loose or seams are coming up. Let glue dry.

    • 2

Apply a skim coat of light-weight joint compound to all seams using a small putty knife. Use thin coats of plaster to fill in the ridge where two sheets of wallpaper meet. Allow plaster to dry. Lightly sand plaster using a fine- to medium-grit sanding sponge. Wipe dust away with a damp towel. Continue to add joint compound and sand until the seams have been completely disguised. No difference in elevation should be seen where the seam lies.

Tape off the walls, baseboards, ceiling and trim using one-inch painter's tape. Remove all furniture from the room. Cover any remaining items with large sheets of plastic. Cover all flooring surfaces with drop cloths.

    • 4

Paint the wallpapered walls with a bonding primer. Use a primer such as Glidden's Gripper paint or Faux Effects Aqua Bond. The color of the primer does not matter as it will be covered with plaster. Roll the primer onto the walls using a short-haired roller. Remember to trim out the perimeter of the surface with an angled brush. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours.

Apply the Venetian plaster using a drywall or Venetian plaster metal trowel. Purchase a trowel with beveled corners to keep nicks and dings from forming in the plaster. Take a small putty knife and put about two tablespoons of Venetian plaster onto the trowel. Hold the trowel at a slight angle. Lightly cover the wall with an even, overall coat of plaster. Use more than one color of plaster for a multi-toned look. Apply the first plaster layer very thin---no more than approximately ¼ inch thick. Let plaster dry four hours.

    • 6

Lightly sand the dry plaster using a fine grit sanding sponge. Wipe off excess dust with a damp rag. Prepare to apply a second coat. The second coat and any coats thereafter should be extremely thin. Place a small amount of plaster onto the trowel. Skim the surface of the plaster. Fill in any small holes or gaps in the first plaster layer. Allow to dry. Determine if the plaster is smooth enough or if additional skim coating is needed. Always sand between coats.

Apply layer of topcoat to the walls for added moisture protection and a satin sheen. Use Behr's Venetian Plaster Topcoat. Use the trowel to apply a light, even coat. Look at the wall at an extremely close angle to ensure the topcoat is evenly applied, and no spots have been missed. It will be difficult to see the transparent topcoat. Allow to dry 24 hours. Inspect the walls to see if all areas are covered; look for uneven sheen or feel for areas that were not topcoated.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have a five-gallon bucket and old rags handy to occasionally clean trowel when applying both the plaster and topcoat.
