The door switch is a simple on/off device that prevents the dishwasher from operating when the dishwasher door is open. When the switch is faulty, the dishwasher will not operate as it should. Owners of Whirlpool dishwashers have a door switch that is separate from the door latch. Once you know how to replace a door switch on a Whirlpool dishwasher, you can have your dishwasher working correctly again.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Torx driver
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Disconnect the power supply to the Whirlpool dishwasher. Turn the circuit breaker off inside the home electrical panel that powers the dishwasher.

  2. Step 2

Open the dishwasher door, and locate the 10 Torx screws that secure the inner door panel to the outer door panel. Use a Torx driver to remove the screws, and push the panel toward the dishwasher to disengage the spring clips. Lift the inner door panel out of the way.

  3. Step 3

Locate the door latch and the door switch. The door switch may have a small access covering that is secured by two screws. Pull the wire leads off the door switch terminals with a pair of needle nose pliers. Remove the two screws that secure the door switch to the door panel with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the door switch out of the dishwasher door.

  4. Step 4

Set the new dishwasher door switch into place on the dishwasher door, and secure it with the retaining screws. Slip the wire leads over the door switch terminals until they lock into place. Replace the door switch access cover if you had to remove one.

  5. Step 5

Position the inner door panel over the inside bottom edge of the outer door, and lay the inner panel flat. Slide the inner door panel toward you to engage the locking clips. Secure the inner door panel into place using the Torx screws. Close the dishwasher door, and turn the circuit breaker back onto the dishwasher.
