How to Deseed a Tomato for Tomato Soup

Tomatoes are a very popular and versatile fruit. They can be eaten raw, put in salads, or cooked in a variety of dishes. To use tomatoes in soups or sauces, though, it's usually best to peel and deseed them first, to keep the taste as sweet as possible. To skin and deseed a tomato, follow a couple of easy steps.       Wash your tomato thoroughly to remove any chemicals or dirt.

      Cut a cross in the bottom of the tomato, using a sharp knife.

      Put the tomato in boiling water to soften it. Leave it in the water for 1 minute.

      Remove the tomato from the pot, and cool it under running tap water.

      Use the knife to pull the skin off, starting at your initial cuts. Remove the skin while you hold the tomato under the running water.

      Cut the skinned tomato in half at its equator.

      Scoop out the seeds using your spoon.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before using, check the tomato for any damage, such as bruises.

  • Removing the skin from a tomato keeps it from "rolling" in soup or sauce.

  • Removing seeds eliminates the bitterness of the tomato.

  • Save seeds and dry them to plant tomato plants in your garden.
