How to Use a Canon Eos Rebel G

The Canon EOS Rebel G is an advanced 35mm film camera, designed for the photographer who wants the look of film with the bells and whistles of the digital age. The Rebel G is similar to other Canon digital and film cameras and mixes the two worlds in an easy-to-understand and easy-to-use way.

Instructions

  1. Loading Film

    • 1

Turn the camera on by turning the control knob (located on the top left side of the camera) so that the white hash mark no longer points at the red "L."

    • 2

Open the camera back by unlatching the door release button on the left side of the camera. The back should spring forward, and you will see a space for the film to set inside. Make sure the area is clear of debris, and notice the small orange mark near the bottom of the right spool.

    • 3

Place the film canister inside the semicircular indention in the camera body. Be sure that the circular plastic knob, which is found on one of the ends of the film canister, points down into the camera body. This allows the film leader (the protruding flap of unexposed film) to easily slide out of the canister.

    • 4

Pull the film out of the canister so that the tip of the leader reaches the previously mentioned orange mark near the right spool. Make sure the film is flush and even to prevent folding or tearing once the film advances.

    • 5

Close the camera back and check the LCD to make sure the film is reading properly and has advanced automatically to the first frame.

    Attaching a Lens

    • 6

Hold the camera in your hand facing away from your body, and choose your desired lens. Uncap the lens back, and hold the lens parallel to the ground (perpendicular to the camera body).

    • 7

A small red dot can be found on the outside of the lens; rotate the dot to the 12 o'clock position and line it up with the red dot found on the camera body. Slide the lens into the front of the lens mount, and turn it clockwise about 30 degrees until you feel and hear it lock into place.

    • 8

Test the lens to make sure it is attached securely. Remove the lens cap, and prepare to shoot.

    Taking a Picture

    • 9

Once the film and camera are prepared, you will need to set the exposure. Exposure is set by turning the control knob (the one that was twisted earlier to turn the camera on) to whichever setting you prefer.

    • 10

Choose between the six automatic exposure modes, which determine aperture and shutter speed automatically, or between the six user-defined and manual exposure modes, which allow you to set your own preferences. Experiment by testing out all of the options to find the settings you like best.

    • 11

Once you have adjusted the camera's settings, press the shutter button, which is located on the upper right side of the camera, halfway. This will auto-focus the frame and adjust the automatic light meter.

    • 12

Look through the viewfinder to frame the subject as desired. Once you are content with the framing and composition, press the shutter button fully to snap a picture and immortalize the subject.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Canon EOS Rebel G comes with many features that can be adjusted to your specifications. Photographs can be taken in black and white or sepia tones, for instance. Have fun and experiment with your camera to find out all it can do.

  • Be careful not to load or unload film in direct sunlight, as this could cause the unexposed film to fog or fade. Likewise, be careful not to touch the inner workings of the camera, such as the shutter curtains or ground glass, as this also will cause blurring or fogging.

  • Because of the way film is loaded (it is wound completely around the take-up spool and back into the canister immediately, as opposed to rewinding all at once at the end of a roll), it can be very tricky to rewind only part of the film for use in another camera or for double-exposure techniques, if that is so desired.
