How to Remove Husks From Black Walnuts

Black walnuts grow in husks that are green to brown depending upon how ripe they are. These husks must be removed so black walnuts can be treated and eaten. If they are left in husks for too long, black walnuts will mold. If the husks are not removed soon after they are harvested, the color of the husk will be transferred to the nut and taint the taste. Instructions

    • 1

Wait for black walnuts to drop off the tree. Picking these nuts before they are ready to drop will render removing the husk virtually impossible. Doing so also risks damage to the tree.

    • 2

Put the nuts on a level gravel driveway or road and spread them out so they none are touching each other.

    • 3

Drive over the nuts several times. The shells of these nuts are extremely hard and this method will not hurt the meat.

    • 4

Pick your nuts up off of the gravel and roll one by one in your hand until the husk comes off. Be sure to wear gloves or your hands will turn black.

    • 5

Drill holes in a piece of plywood that are just slightly larger than an average black walnut without the husk. Force the nuts that may still have any of the husks still attached through the holes with a hammer.

    • 6

Wash the husked black walnuts in clear water. Agitate them to remove the remaining pieces of the husk.
