How to Use a Steam Iron to Remove Wallpaper
Many older homes have wallpapered walls, a common decorating touch in years past. If your home's walls are covered in old wallpaper that needs replacing, you'll have to remove it first before you can paint your walls or put up new wallpaper. Removing wallpaper is best done with a steam iron, a paint scraper and a bit of elbow grease. This helps ensure quick removal and a clean finish. Does this Spark an idea?

Dip the sponge in the water and soak it thoroughly. Lightly wring it out and, starting at the top of each wallpaper strip (use the ladder if necessary), wipe down the wallpaper with the sponge. Do not completely soak the wallpaper, just wet it. Rewet the sponge as needed.

Plug the iron in and fill its reservoir with water. Turn it on and allow it to heat up. Again, at the top of each wallpaper strip, hold the bottom of the iron an inch or less away. Press the steam button to begin releasing the steam and slowly move the iron down the length of the wallpaper.

Use the paint scraper to slide behind the wallpaper as you steam it. The steam will melt the glue holding the wallpaper to the wall, allowing you to just pull the wallpaper away.

Use the paint scraper to scrape the excess glue off of the wall while it is still pliable.

Tips & Warnings
Consider wearing goggles and gloves when performing this procedure; steam irons can produce a significant amount of steam, which could burn you if you are not protected.
