Things You'll Need:
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- New washer coupler
- 3/8-inch socket
- Hammer
-
Step 1
Unplug the power cord of the Whirlpool washer from the wall outlet. Move the washer away from the wall two feet to allow room to place the control console back into a service position.
-
Step 2
Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws on each end of the front control console that secure it to the top panel. Grab the ends of the control console, and flip the console back toward the wall. This will place the control console in the service position.
-
Step 3
Use a flathead screwdriver inserted in the brass cabinet mounting clips in the top corner of the washer to remove the clips. Push the handle of the screwdriver toward the rear of the washer to pop the clips out. Disconnect the lid switch wiring harness at the top right of the washer top.
-
Step 4
Grab the Whirlpool washer cabinet on both sides, and move it away from the washer base and out of the work area.
-
Step 5
Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the two retaining clips that secure the water pump to the motor shaft. Move the water pump off the shaft, and push it out of the way without removing any hoses from the water pump.
-
Step 6
Lift up on the plastic locking tab of the motor wiring harness, and pull the harness apart. Remove the two screws that are attached to the retaining clips with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pry the motor retaining clips off with a flathead screwdriver. Pry the bottom clip off first, and hold the motor while prying off the top clip.
-
Step 7
Pull the motor away from the transmission. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the old coupler from the motor shaft and transmission housing. Use a 3/8-inch socket to tap the plastic coupler pieces into the transmission housing and onto the motor shaft. Place the rubber portion of the coupler into the transmission housing lining one of the holes in the 12:00 position.
-
Step 8
Turn the motor to match the alignment hole on the rubber coupler in the transmission housing, and reattach the motor to the housing. Secure the motor to the housing using the mounting clips. Reattach the wiring harness, and slide the water pump back over the motor shaft. Secure the water pump using the retaining clips.
-
Step 9
Position the washer cabinet back into position over the washer base. Snap the retaining clips back into the washer top to secure the rear panel to the washer cabinet. Reconnect the door switch wiring harness.
-
Step 10
Pull the control back down, and secure it to the top panel using the retaining screws. Push the washer back into its working position, and plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
