How to Set Hair in Curlers
Women generally use curlers to create wave and curls in their hair. Large curlers can also be used to straighten and smooth out the hair. Setting hair using curlers was a common practice as far back as the 1950s. It's one of the healthiest ways to add style to your hair. Setting hair in traditional curlers can involve using heat, but it's nowhere near as damaging as hot rollers, hair straighteners or curling irons. Hair can be set in curlers when it's wet or damp, depending on personal preference. Does this Spark an idea?

Shampoo and condition your hair. Blot excess water from hair using a towel. Use wide-tooth comb to take out any tangles. Apply mousse or hair gel to the entire length of your hair. A setting lotion may be used instead.

2
Part your hair where you usually do. You will use the comb to section your hair into pieces about the width of the roller. Start with a section that is in front, near your part. Wrap the section of hair around the roller and use a clip to secure it. When wrapping the hair around the curler, use a bit of tension. Pull the hair a bit as you are rolling it. Continue wrapping sections around rollers and clipping them until all of the hair is done.

If you are comfortable using heat, sit under a hooded dryer for approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Alternately, you can use a blow dryer to apply heat but it may be time consuming and tiring for your arms. If you would rather not use heat, the hair can air dry as well. However, this will take several hours depending on the thickness and length of the hair.

Remove the curlers only when your hair is totally dry. If they are removed too soon, the hair will fall flat. Unroll them slowly and carefully. Once they have all been taken out, spray hair with a light mist of hairspray.

5
Use fingers to separate the curls. To reduce the curl, comb through the hair. This will soften the curls and hair will appear wavy rather than curly. Avoid this if your hair is prone to frizz.

Tips & Warnings
Don't use too much hair on each individual curler. When in doubt, use more curlers with less hair on each curler.
Any size of curler can be used to set hair. If tighter curls are desired, use smaller curlers. For larger curls or waves, use large rollers.
