1
Unplug the Whirlpool washer power cord from the wall outlet. Disconnect the front of the control panel from the washer top by removing the end cap retaining screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the front of the control console up and back to rest the console in a service position. The control console will rest on its hinge in this position.

2
Locate the lid switch wiring harness at the back of the top panel. Squeeze the plastic locking tab with your fingers, and pull the wiring connector apart. Two brass clips that secure the rear panel to the top panel are located on each top corner. Insert a flathead screwdriver into each clip slot, and pop the securing clip out of the top panel.

Grab the washer cabinet at both sides, and move it away from the washer base. Open the washer lid, and remove the two screws that secure the lid switch to the washer with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Hold on to the lid switch while you are unscrewing the retaining screws. Pull the lid switch out of the cabinet, and unsnap the wire connector from the back of the cabinet.

4
Place the new lid switch into position under the Whirlpool washer cabinet. Secure the lid switch to the cabinet using the retaining screws. Make sure the wires slide into a clip under the cabinet. Clip the wire connector into place on the rear of the cabinet. This keeps the wires from getting crimped between the cabinet and the wash tub.

5
Place the washer cabinet back into place over the washer base. Press both of the brass retaining clips back into the washer cabinet. Plug the wire connector into the new lid switch connector by pressing them together until they lock in place.
-
6
Set the control console front back down on the top of the Whirlpool washer, and secure it with the retaining screws. Plug the washer cord back into the wall outlet.
