How to Start a Stihl Weedeater
Proper tool maintenance is important and will make the difference between a tool lasting two years or 20. Stihl weed eaters are no exception. All Stihl weed eaters come with a maintenance chart for keeping the tool working properly and thereby minimizing down time. Tool parts must be cleaned and replaced when they wear out or after a certain amount of use. The carburetor can be adjusted to make sure you can start the weed eater and keep the engine idling smoothly. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Air compressor
- New air filter

1
Remove the air filter cover over the carburetor and remove any loose dirt from the cover. Set the choke lever to the diagonal icon before removing the air filter. Take the air filter out of the housing. Blow dirt and debris off it with compressed air. If the filter is damaged, replace it. Place the cleaned or new air filter back into the housing and close the air filter cover securely.

2
Shut the engine off to adjust the engine idle speed. Turn the high-speed screw (H) with a Phillips screwdriver. Turn counterclockwise until it stops. Do not force it to turn farther than stop. Turn the low-speed screw (L) clockwise until it stops. Then turn it one full turn counterclockwise. Start the engine and allow it to warm up. Adjust the idle speed screw (LA) so the cutting tool does not spin when the engine idles. You might have to fine-tune the high-speed screw at high altitudes of at sea level to make the engine run correctly.

Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Remove the spark plug with a spark plug removal tool or a ratcheting wrench and a socket that fits over the spark plug snugly. Wipe any black carbon deposits off the spark plug off with a cloth rag and inspect the condition of the spark plug. If the spark plug is generally clean and in good condition, check the spark plug gap with a gapping tool to the correct gap (.02 inches) and reinstall it. If it shows signs of damage or wear, replace it with a new spark plug. Stihl recommends using only approved replacement parts. Check the gap of the new spark plug before installing it. Reattach the spark plug wire.

4
Check the gear box on the business end of the weed eater to be sure it is well greased. Remove the filler plug. If you see no grease, screw a tube of Stihl gear lubricant into the hole and add a half-ounce of grease to the gear box. Remove the grease tube and replace the gear box plug.
