Sebum, an oily matter that comes from sebacious glands under the skin, is released to keep the skin well lubricated and hydrated. A normal amount of sebum production helps the skin remain youthful looking, but an abundance of sebum can create problems. When oily sebum and dead skin and bacteria accumulate in the pores, a pimple generally forms. By reducing the production of sebum, it is possible to foster clear, beautiful skin.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skin cleanser
  • Astringent
  • Clay mask
  1. Step 1

Use skin cleanser that is designed for oily skin. Make it a point to cleanse your skin two times a day and no more. It is important to wash off excess sebum from the surface of your skin, but washing your skin too many times in one day can signal the glands that the oil needs to be replaced. This can send them into overdrive, conditioning them to make too much sebum. After washing your skin, use an astringent to remove any remaining oil.

  2. Step 2

Use gentle pressure whenever you wash your face or rub your face with an exfoliant. Heavy rubbing of your skin will stimulate the oil glands and they will produce more sebum. Lightly spread cleanser over moistened skin using gentle circular motions with your fingertips for four seconds and rinse cleanser off thoroughly. Use a clay mask on your face once a week to reduce oil production and balance oil.

  3. Step 3

Additional ways to lower the production of sebum include using oil-free makeup and getting a facial once a month to deep clean pores. You can also remove any excess oil from your skin by wiping your skin with oil-control cleansing pads throughout the day. Do not style your hair with bangs as the oil from your hair will add to the oil on your skin. Also keep your hands off your face to prevent transference of oils from your hands to the skin on your face.
