How to Clean AC Condenser Coils
AC units are a great way to stay cool during hot and humid summer days. They pull hot air out while replacing it with cool, dry air. The only problem is that the circulation of air also circulates dust, hair and other airborne dirt that can build up on the AC coils. Air-conditioning units have two types of coils: evaporator coils, also referred to as "indoor coils," and condenser coils, also referred to as "outdoor coils." Does this Spark an idea?

- Screwdriver
- Socket wrench
- Vacuum or compressed air
- Cleaning solution
- Bristle brush
- Fin comb

Remove the grille that covers the condenser coils on the outside unit. The condenser coils are generally visible, and look like tightly packed thin strands of metal.

Use a hose vacuum attachment to vacuum across the coils to remove any loose dust and other debris. Gently bring the end of the hose back and forth over the coils. You can also use a can of compressed air to complete this step, but this may also push debris further into the system.

Go back and forth over the coils with a firm bristle brush if there are any debris stuck on.

Apply a household cleaning solution to the coils If there are stains or things stuck to the coils. It is best to use a spray bottle and spray the coils. Allow the cleaning solution to sit for a few minutes.

Go over the coils again with the bristle brush.

Use a fin comb to straighten out any bent coils.
