Travertine is becoming an increasingly popular building material. It can be used in bathrooms, kitchens and as flooring throughout a home. The natural stone is porous and can be purchased filled or unfilled. The filled type has grout that fills natural holes in the stone. The unfilled is left in the original state to suggest a rustic or worn look. It is not suggested that Travertine stone be stained, but it can be done.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wood stain
  • Stone color enhancer
  • Stone sealer
  • Staining sponges
  1. Step 1

Choose a wood stain that is roughly one shade lighter than you are hoping to achieve on the Travertine stone.

  2. Step 2

Use a test stone that will be out of sight to test the stain. Apply the stain in small circular motions on the stone using a staining sponge. Leave the stain to set for several hours.

  3. Step 3

If you are happy with the color, proceed with staining the remainder of the stone in the same manner. If the color is too light, apply a second coat. If it is too dark, use less stain on future areas.

  4. Step 4

Use a color enhancer to enhance the shine and color of the stone. You can use a two-in-one sealer and enhancer to get the job done quicker. Apply the enhancer as per the instructions on the can and allow the Travertine to dry overnight before using it or getting it wet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Travertine, because of its porous nature, can be unpredictable when you are attempting to stain it an alternative color.
