How to Make Crystal Flowers

Crystal flowers can be made from a combination of crystal beads, seed beads and beading thread. The crystal beads make up the majority of the flower while the seed beads are used to trim the petals and hold the design together. A thin but strong beading thread is necessary when working with crystal beads because of their sharp edges. The beads are sewn together freehand, so no knowledge of special beading stitches is required.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 feet nylon beading thread
  • 1 beading needle
  • 1 package seed beads, size 11/0
  • 1 crystal rondelle bead, 8 mm
  • 8 bicone crystal beads, 6 mm
  • 8 bicone crystal beads, 4 mm
  1. Step 1

Thread the needle with the beading thread and string one seed bead, the 8-mm crystal rondelle and another seed bead, leaving an 8-inch tail of thread for sewing and weaving in later on.

  2. Step 2

Skip the last seed bead strung and pass the needle back through the rondelle and the first seed bead, coming out in the opposite direction as the 8-inch tail of thread.

  3. Step 3

Pick up eight seed beads on the needle and pass the needle through the seed bead on the opposite side of the rondelle, then repeat this to add seed beads to the other side of the rondelle. This surrounds the rondelle with a ring of seed beads.

  4. Step 4

Pick up a 6-mm bicone bead and another seed bead. Skip the seed bead and pass the needle back through the bicone, then through the next two seed beads on the ring.

  5. Step 5

Repeat Step 4 seven times. You will have eight 6-mm bicone beads on the flower when you finish.

  6. Step 6

Switch the needle to the tail of the thread and knot it with the working thread tight against the ring of seed beads. Pass the needle with the tail thread through the ring of seed beads once, then knot again and pass the tail through the center of the rondelle before cutting. Return the needle to the working thread.

  7. Step 7

Pick up five seed beads on the needle and pass the needle through the seed bead at the top of the 6-mm bicone.

  8. Step 8

Pick up five more seed beads and pass the needle through the next two seed beads on the seed bead ring.

  9. Step 9

Pick up a 4-mm crystal bicone bead and pass the needle back around through the same two seed beads on the ring, working in the same direction as you just did in Step 8. This secures the 4-mm bead to the ring.

  10. Step 10

Repeat Steps 7 to 9 seven times. Note that you are working on the wrong side of the flower at this point and as you add the 4-mm beads to the ring, the larger bicone beads will force the smaller ones to pop over to the right side of the work where they'll form their own ring.

  11. Step 11

Pass the needle through to the right side of the project and run it through all the 4-mm bicone beads. Pull to tighten their ring, then pass the needle to the wrong side again.

  12. Step 12

Tie the thread off with a couple of knots on the wrong side of the flower, then weave in the end of the thread through a few beads before cutting it off.
