How to Thread Pearls
Basic jewelry making techniques include threading pearls onto a strand with knots separating them. This stringing method is most often used with pearls or more expensive jewelry components, as it creates a more secure necklace or bracelet. Practice this technique on a strand of faux pearls or beads before you try to restring your set of fine jewelry. It's not difficult to master, but it does take practice.

1
Cut a 6-inch length of beading wire. Fold it in half. Cut the ends at a point. This is your beading needle.

2
Cut a strand of silk thread five times the desired length of your pearl necklace or bracelet. The knots between each pearl take up more thread than you might think. Thread one end of the thread through the loop created when you folded the beading wire in half. Pull the thread far enough through the loop so that it will not come out.

Clip a paper clip at the loose end of your thread, 12 inches from the end. Thread all of your pearls onto the strand to the paper clip. The thread should be single strand through the pearls. The paper clip will keep the pearls on the thread. You can also place the threaded pearls on a work space covered with felt. The felt will help keep the pearls from rolling and will protect them from a hard table top.

Thread your needle through one section of your clasp and tie an overhand knot to secure it in place. Thread the needle through the pearl closest to the clasp. Tie an overhand knot with the loose thread around the thread already through the pearl. To make an overhand knot, loop your needle around the pearl thread immediately behind the pearl, and then insert the needle into the loop. Slide the knot as close to the pearl as possible as you are pulling it through the loop. Pull the thread taut to make the knot.

5
Send your needle through the next pearl on the thread and make an overhand knot. Repeat this step until all of your pearls have knots between them.

6
Tie on the remaining section of clasp after the last knot in your pearl strand. Cut away the excess thread.
