How to Build Your Own King Size Bed
The easiest way to create your own king-size bed is to combine two twin-size beds using either a commercial kit or a procedure of your own. The latter involves joining the mattresses with luggage straps and covering both with one king-size mattress pad or memory foam. The result is not perfect, but it's worth doing if you're trying to stretch a budget and need a king-size bed in your guest room. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Join the twin mattresses. Use either a commercial strapping kit such as Create-a-King, or put your own luggage straps or tie-down cords around the circumference of the mattresses. The commercial kit secures the beds around the circumference as well, and also covers the gap created down the center. The kit costs $45 to $75. If you use your own materials, do not strap the mattresses together across the tops, or whoever uses the bed will feel it. But you must secure the mattresses together to keep them from separating when someone moves around on top of the bed.

2
Place the connected mattresses horizontally across two vertical twin box springs. This will keep them from separating as easily. If you have a king-size frame, you can use that instead of the box springs. Do not attempt to connect two twin-size frames, because the gap space in the center will be too large to have a comfortable bed.

3
Fill the gap space between the connected mattresses with either a folded sheet or rolled pillowcases. Mattresses are rounded on the edges, and no matter how tightly they are strapped together, the bed will have a dipping curve in the center where they meet. The folded sheet or rolled pillowcases will raise the height along the space enough to allow a pad or memory foam to lie more evenly across the bed.

4
Purchase a king-size memory foam or pillow-top mattress pad. Place it atop the new bed. Good memory foams can be expensive, $75 to $200. But because you are saving money by not buying a king mattress, a quality mattress pad will not assault your budget.

5
Cover the new bed with king-size sheets, comforters, pillows and blanket.
