Plan, plan, plan. One of the biggest wastes of money is trying to make a change to your remodel when the project has already been set on a particular course. Make a step-by-step list of the tasks you need to accomplish, along with an accompanying timeline, supply list and budget. If you are working with a professional, sketch out every detail of what you want so that there are no expensive misunderstandings.

Consider whether to do it yourself or hire a pro. While it may seem more affordable on the surface to do it yourself, if something goes wrong, you could end up having to do it over or hiring a pro anyway. Or, if you accomplish the job but it's not professional-looking, your home can lose some of its value.
To save money when using a pro, try hiring him during off-peak times. Be sure to get everything in writing with your contractor via a signed contract. In addition, think about things you can do on your own to save money. This can include the removal and replacement of tiles, painting and clean-up.

Purchase your own fixtures and accessories. Check out flea markets, resale outlets and salvage yards for the things you need rather than relying on your contractor or hardware store. Alternatively, go through a company used by your contractor if you can get a special discount. Further add to your savings by retrieving your supplies yourself rather than paying for delivery.

Think in terms of the long-term investment. While it may be difficult to part with the money for additional remodels, consider that such a project adds tremendous value to your home if done correctly. If you have several remodeling projects in mind for the future, consider bundling a few to reduce repeated sessions with contractors. This can save money on supplies and general overhead if you know you are going to have to pursue certain projects in the future anyway.
