How to Block Websites Without Software

The Internet is filled with sites most parents would find inappropriate for their children. Monitoring your child's computer access all the time can be difficult. By using the controls available in the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser, you can restrict access to any website you choose without buying additional software.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Internet Explorer and click "Tools" on the menu at the top of the screen. Click "Internet Options" and select the "Content" tab.

    • 2

Locate the section labeled "Content Advisor" and click "Enable." You will see four tabs: "Ratings," "Approved Sites," "General" and "Advanced."

    • 3

Click on the "Ratings" tab and choose the levels of language, nudity, sex and violence you would like to block.

    • 4

Click on the "Approved Sites" tab and use the "Allow This Website" field to either approve or deny access to a specific website by entering the site's URL and clicking "Always" or "Never."

    • 5

Select the "General" tab and find the "Supervisor Password" section. Click "Create Password" and enter the password of your choice in the text box. Anyone seeking to change any of the Content Advisor ratings or blocked websites must enter the password.

Tips & Warnings

  • Requiring a password to sign on to your computer can also restrict access to the Internet. You can set a start-up password through the Microsoft Windows Control Panel.

  • Review the websites your child views. Some websites purposely use misleading names that have nothing to do with the content of the site.

  • Monitor your child's use of social networking websites such as MySpace.com, Facebook.com and Friendster.com to prevent your child from entering into discussions with unknown adults.
