Use a tape measure and find the width and length of a room inside your home. For example, let's say the room is 11 feet wide and 15 feet long.

Multiply the two measurements to calculate the area of the room in square feet. To continue with our example, this room contains 165 square feet. Most floor coverings are sold by the square yard. A yard is 3 feet long. A square yard is a square that is 3 feet wide by 3 feet long, so a square yard will be 9 square feet.

Find the square yardage of the 11-foot by 15-foot room. Divide 165 square feet by 9 square feet per square yard. The room contains 18.33 square yards of area.

Calculate the area of a round patio, 12 feet in diameter, that sits in the rear yard of a home. The area of any circle is equal to pi times the radius squared (a = 3.1416 x r^2), where pi is equal to 3.1416 and the radius of any circle is half the full diameter.

Square the radius of the 12-foot-diameter patio by multiplying 6 feet times 6 feet, which is equal to 36 square feet. Multiply 3.1416 (pi) times 36 square feet for a total area of 113.06 square feet.

Find the area in yardage for the round patio. Divide 113.06 square feet by 9 square feet per square yard. The round patio contains 12.57 square yards of area.
