How to Build Your Own Bed Set

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark your fabric using a straight edge and a fabric marking pen. You will need to measure and mark four pieces of fabric to be 75 inches wide by 87 inches long. One piece is for the top of the comforter and one is for the bottom. One piece is for the flat sheet and the last piece is for the dust ruffle. Measure and mark one piece of batting to be 75 inches wide by 87 inches long. Choose to use only one pattern of fabric or mix and match patterns and colors for a unique bed set.

Use sharp scissors to cut the fabric and batting to size. Lay the top piece of the comforter face down. Lay the batting evenly over it. Lay the back side of the comforter straight on top of the batting. It should be pattern side up. Fold the edges of each side over ½ inch and then again ½ inch. It will be a roll. Insert pins every 4 inches to secure. Do the sides and then the top and bottom. When you get to the corners remove the pins from the bottom fold before inserting pins through all layers. This way the pins don't get trapped inside when you stitch the seam.

Find the flat sheet. Fold the edges the same way you folded the edges of the comforter. Use pins to secure every 3 inches. For the dust ruffle, use pins to secure 12 inch wide lace or ribbon to the edge of fabric. You can fold the fabric edge over ½ inch before pinning on the lace or ribbon for a nice clean seam. Make sure that the fabric and lace are both face down when you are pinning them together. You want the top sides of the to show without the hemmed edge.

Use a sewing machine and a matching colored thread to sew all seams that have been pinned. Sew twice for extra strength and durability. When you are finished sewing the bed set, remove all of the pins. Make sure not to miss any pins.

Lift the mattress and slip the dust ruffle under it on the box spring. Make sure the dust ruffle is even on all sides. Put the mattress back into place and put the fitted sheet on the bed. Spread the flat sheet you made on the bed. Put the two new pillowcases on the pillows. Put the pillows on the bed under the top of the flat sheet. Pull the flat sheet up over the pillows. Spread on the comforter that you made. Enjoy your beautiful and warm new bed set.
