Ceiling fans do not cool the air by reducing the temperature of the room in the same way as air conditioning. The circulation of air provided by the fan makes the skin feel cooler. If there is air conditioning in the room the thermostat can be set to run less frequently. The gentle breeze from circulating air is a cost effective way to feel cool when air-conditioning a room is not feasible.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  1. Step 1

Measure the size of the room for square footage. Square footage is determined by multiplying the length and the width of the room. This measurement is necessary to select the correct size of fan blades.

  2. Step 2

Select a fan size that is appropriate for the square footage of the room. Blades are measured from blade tip to blade tip. It is better to have a fan slightly larger for a room rather than one that is too small to circulate the air.

  3. Step 3

Read the details on the manufacturer's description of the fan. Packaged fans will have printed information comparing the fan size and the square footage of the room it will service.

  4. Step 4

Compare your room size with the fan size. A 32-inch fan will work in a room up to 80 square feet. A 42-inch fan fits a room size of 80 to 120 square feet. A fan that is 44 inches works best in a room that is 120 to 144 square feet. A room that is 144 square feet or larger will need a fan that is 52 inches.

  5. Step 5

Purchase two fans for rooms that are too large or long to be cooled by one fan. Divide the square footage of the room by half to determine the size of the fans needed.
