Replacing the fan motor assembly on your Honda Civic is much easier and faster if you follow the proper procedure. And you do not have to remove the front of your Civic, even if you need extra room. With the new fan on hand and a few common tools, it's not hard at all to remove and install the new assembly on your Civic model.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wrench
  • Ratchet and socket
  • Catch pan, if necessary
  • Slip joint pliers, if necessary

    Remove the Fan Assembly

  1. Step 1

Make a note of the radio security code, if necessary.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect the negative and positive battery cables using a wrench starting with the negative side first. Then remove the battery from the car.

  3. Step 3

Unplug the cooling fan electrical connector and detach the assembly wiring guide brackets using a ratchet and socket.

  4. Step 4

Drain 3 qt. of coolant if you need more room to remove the fan assembly. Larry Warren, in his Honda Civic Haynes Repair Manual, suggests draining only 3 qt. of coolant before removing the hose. Open the radiator drain valve and use a catch pan for the coolant. Then close the radiator drain valve. Use a pair of slip joint pliers to remove the hose clamp. Then twist and pull the hose off the radiator fitting.

  5. Step 5

Remove the wire harness guides from the battery tray using the ratchet and socket.

  6. Step 6

Remove the battery tray using the ratchet and socket.

  7. Step 7

Take the wire harness holders and electrical connector for the A/C compressor clutch off the upper radiator support bracket. Use the ratchet and socket.

  8. Step 8

Unscrew the cooling fan assembly using the ratchet and socket. Then carefully remove the fan assembly from the vehicle.

  9. Install the New Fan Assembly

  10. Step 1

Set the new cooling fan assembly in place and tighten the mounting bolts using the ratchet and socket.

  11. Step 2

Install the wire harness holders and electrical connector for the A/C compressor on the upper radiator support bracket. Use the ratchet and socket.

  12. Step 3

Install the battery tray using the ratchet and socket.

  13. Step 4

Install the wire harness guides on the battery tray using the ratchet and socket.

  14. Step 5

Connect the upper radiator hose to the radiator, if you had to remove it. Secure the hose with the clamp using the slip joint pliers.

  15. Step 6

Plug the cooling fan electrical connector and attach the assembly wiring guide brackets using the ratchet and socket.

  16. Step 7

Set the battery on the tray and connect the negative and positive battery cables using the wrench. Connect the positive cable first.

  17. Step 8

Enter the radio security code, if necessary, following the instructions on your car owner's manual.

  18. Step 9

Refill the cooling system following the instructions on your car owner's manual.
