Instructions

    • 1

Determine the floor area that you intend to paint so you can tape off the painted sections. Tape off the area of the wooden floor where you plant to paint your designs. For example, if you are painting a border, determine the desired width of your border and place a strip of painter's tape that encompasses the border width. If you are painting a rug design in the center of the wooden floor, tape off the outside perimeter of the rug design first, then tape off areas within the rug design for each different paint color. If you're painting the entire floor, do not tape until after you have sanded.

    • 2

Sand the area of floor between the tape strips with light grade sandpaper. Most wooden floors are already coated with stain or varnish and you must sand them to remove the gloss. Remove all of the sanding debris with a damp cloth or mop. Let the floor dry completely.

    • 3

Prime the wooden floor between the tape strips. Let the primer dry.

    • 4

Paint the area between the tape strips with acrylic or latex paint. You can use paint brushes, paint sponges or paint rollers, depending on the scope of the area you are painting. You may need more than one coat to adequately cover the area. Let the paint dry completely between coats. Remove the tape.

    • 5

Apply a clear coat of polyurethane over your completed paint designs. Let the polyurethane dry.
