Bing cherries are the most common variety of cherries in the United States. Bing cherry trees yield big, sweet fruit and are an aesthetically beautiful tree for any landscape. Contrary to popular belief, you can't plant a cherry seed in order to grow a cherry tree. Cherry trees are generally grown from cuttings from an existing plant. You can easily buy a very young cherry tree at any reputable nursery or home and garden store. Bing cherry trees should be planted in the early spring.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cherry tree
  • Shovel
  • Serrated kitchen knife
  • Garden hose
  • Mulch
  1. Step 1

Determine whether you can actually plant a Bing cherry tree that will yield fruit. Cherry trees require cross-pollination, meaning you should plant two cherry trees (a "male" and "female"). If you can't plant two trees because of the size of your garden, you need to plant your Bing cherry tree near another existent Bing cherry tree.

  2. Step 2

Buy a Bing cherry tree at a reputable nursery or home and garden store.

  3. Step 3

Find a plot of soil in your garden that gets plenty of sunlight and has at least a 20-foot radius. Bing cherry trees need at least 20 feet between them and other plants or trees.

  4. Step 4

Dig a hole that is 18 to 24 inches deep, depending on the age of the cherry tree you buy.

  5. Step 5

Remove the cherry tree from its plastic container or burlap sack.

  6. Step 6

Cut the root strands that encircle the root ball using a serrated knife or kitchen scissors.

  7. Step 7

Place the tree in the hole, and cover with soil. Do not mix the soil with any fertilizer. Firmly pack the soil around the tree.

  8. Step 8

Water the tree well with a garden hose.

  9. Step 9

Apply a layer of mulch around the tree, leaving a 6-inch ring around the trunk of the tree bare.

  10. Step 10

In the winter, prune the tree. Bing cherry trees generally require very little pruning. In its third year, the tree will bear the fruits of your labor.
