How to Repair a Crack in Tile Grout
Grout is the substance found between tiles that help to bond the tiles together. Not only does the grout serve as an adhesive for the tiles, but it also prevents moisture from seeping in underneath the tiles. Grout can become cracked or begin to crumble over time. When this happens, it leaves the tiled surface looking dingy and can also allow moisture to get under the tiles. Repairing cracked grout will make the overall appearance of the tile look neater and will prevent more serious problems from arising. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use a grout saw to remove damaged grout. Saw down the grout to about ½ the depth of the tile for small cracks. If larger pieces of grout are missing or cracked you will need to saw away all of the loose grout in the joint. You can also use a sharp can opener to chip away the grout for small repairs.

2
Vacuum up the debris from the joints using the hose on your vacuum cleaner. Be sure to remove as much debris as possible so that the grout will set properly.

3
Mix a batch of grout into a bucket according to the manufacturer's instructions. The amount of grout you will need depends on the size and number of cracks. Be sure to buy the same color grout that is already on the tile surface. Do not mix too much grout at once or it may harden before you have a chance to apply it.
-
4
Scoop some grout onto the tile. Again, how much grout you will place on the tile will depend on the size of the repair.
-
5
Spread the grout over the damaged joints using a rubber grout float. Hold the grout float at an angle and spread it diagonally. This will ensure that the grout gets into the crevices. Use your finger if necessary to smooth the grout into the joints.
-
6
Allow the grout to dry according to the packaging instructions. Clean up excess grout with a damp sponge. It is a good idea to have a bucket with clean water to rinse the sponge out frequently.
-
7
Go over the tile with a dry towel to remove the haze left from the grout.
