There are several reasons odors begin to build up in a pair of shoes. Shoes used for playing sports are bombarded with excess sweat. This sweat can begin to smell bad over time. If a person has a fungal infection on their feet, their feet will begin to smell bad and this smell sticks to the person's shoes. You don't have to put up with embarrassing shoe odor. Set your sneakers outside in the sun when you get home. The sun will help rid your shoes of any bad odors. The fresh air also will help get rid of the odor and replace it with the scent of the outdoors.

Sometimes setting your sneakers out in the sun in not enough. Baking soda is well known for its ability to get rid of strong odors. Add a quarter of a cup of baking soda to your wash along with your laundry detergent. When your shoes finish washing, you can set them outside and let the sun dry them out.

Add one cup of bleach to your wash if you have a fungal or bacterial infection on your feet. The bleach will kill any germs on the shoes that may be causing the odor. You can do this along with the baking soda from step 2. Again, let your shoes dry naturally in the sun.

Use deodorizing sprays made specifically for foot odor problems. They sell these at department stores as well as pharmacies. Spray some on your socks and inside your shoes each time you wear them.

Tips & Warnings
Keep your feet dry by using baby powder. This will eliminate the amount of sweat that seeps into the shoes.
You also can place your shoes in a freezer bag and set them in a freezer overnight. The cold will kill any bacteria that may be on the shoes.
