Step 1
The First step is feed them a healthy meal prior to going door to door. If they are full from eating a meal they will not be as tempted to eat candy as they go from house to house.
-
Step 2
Do not let candy be the main focus of Halloween. Get them excited by the other activities of the holiday such as carving a pumpkin, choosing their costumes, and decorating the yard. They will be less likely to dwell only on the candy.
-
Step 3
Plan your route ahead of time limiting the number of houses they visit. Have them take their time walking between houses enjoying the yard decorations and other kids’ costumes. Don’t let them rush door to door. Fewer houses mean less candy, therefore, less sugar.
-
Step 4
Always check the treats they receive carefully and then allow them to enjoy some. It is a good idea to set consumption limits with the children prior to going trick or treating so the children know ahead of time what is reasonable to eat that night and what to expect to eat in the days that follow.
